Pied Kingfisher with Catch |
At the water reservoir the other day I noticed a few Pied Kingfishers trying to catch some fish. This one succeeded grabbing a tiny one from the water, and flew by close enough for me to catch this gorgeous pose.
What do i like about this photo? The beautiful pose, with the wings extended and the fish in the beak, and the Kingfisher flying past us with a slight frontal angle. The splashing blue water in the background, and the green water (caused by reflecting the vegetation around the reservoir) further away. I used a fast shutter speed to freeze the action, so we have the Kingfisher sharp even though he's moving quickly through the air, and the water frozen drops in the air. I used an open aperture for a shallow depth of field, so the Kingfisher and the splashing water is sharp, but the rest is blurred out. We're also getting a hint of a reflection of the Kingfisher in the water, for added bonus.
What would I want to improve? I would have liked to be a bit closer to get more details. Eye contact would have been even better :)
