Insects up close can be really beautiful (or terrifying, from the wrong angles). Like this simple fly, for example. Just look at those amazing eyes...
What do I like about this photo? The amount of detail from such a small subject. The interesting pose. The diagonal red branch the fly is standing on. The shallow depth of field (caused by me using an open aperture) really blurs out the background. Enough depth of field to get the head and eyes completely in focus.
What would I want to improve? I would have preferred to have more of the body and wings in focus as well. Closing down the aperture might have worked, but then the background would probably be noisier. Photo stacking was not an option, since the fly was cleaning itself (hence moving).
