Lilac-Breasted Roller on a Branch

This is a photo I was planning on sharing anyway, and I just got the news that it was selected to appear in Dodho magazine! You can find the direct magazine link here: https://www.dodho.com/magazine-worthy-shot/

This is the beautiful Lilac-Breasted Roller, arguably Africa's most beautiful bird (though the competition is tough), standing on a branch with the light shining through the leaves in the back. What a pose!

What do I like about this photo? The lighting, the pose, the eye contact! The feather that's standing to the side to the right of the head adds some interest as well. I used an open aperture to create a shallow depth of field, so the Roller is in focus but the background is blurred out. And what wonderful background it is!

What would I want to improve? Not much, actually. This photo came out pretty much as I wanted it to.

Thanks to Estee, who joined me on this beautiful trip to South Africa.
