Griffon Vulture Eye Contact

Griffon Vulture Eye Contact

I was photographing this impressive Griffon Vulture when we suddenly made eye contact. Talk about a scary look - you wouldn't want to mess with this impressive raptor!

What do I like about this photo? The eye contact, obviously. There's a huge amount of details on the bird - you can zoom in to observe each and every feather. I used an open aperture (f/6.3 - the most open my lens supports at the focal length of 400mm that I used) to create a shallow depth of field, so the Vulture is sharp but the background is blurred out. This way the Vulture stands out from the background. The background itself is interesting as well.

What would I want to improve? The Vulture is standing on top of a cage, and it shows. A more natural element would have been preferable.
