Glossy Ibis Dance Moves

Glossy Ibis Dance Moves

This time of year we're witnessing huge amounts of Glossy Ibises near the fish lakes. This elegant bird, with the beautiful glossy colors, likes to hang together in large herds, and are masters of balancing themselves on ropes above the lakes.

This photo shows one in the balancing act (there was a very strong wind that day). He reminds me of a dancer or a magician showing his moves!

What do I like about this photo? The beautiful subject in an interesting pose. I used a fast shutter speed (1/2500 of a second) to "freeze" the action, and an open aperture (f/5.0 - the most open my lens supports at the focal length of 195mm that I used) to have a shallow depth of field (so the Ibis is in focus but the background is blurred out). That makes the separation of the subject from the background very good.

What would I want to improve? The rope the Ibis stands on is somewhat ugly and steals too much attention. Also, another Ibis was standing to the left and its beak can be seen.
