Remember the Spring

Remember the Spring

A photo from a while ago, when the colors of spring were all around us. The butterfly here is the beautiful and impressive African Queen, joined by a bee that crashed the party but actually fits right in my photo.

What did I do right? The butterfly is in a good location, and the background is blurred and colorful (a result of me using an open aperture). The photo does not have many details, so the eye focuses naturally on the big, beautiful, butterfly. The small bee provides just a little extra.

What would I want to improve? I used a relatively slow shutter (1/640 of a second), since I was preparing for a still shot of the butterfly. As a result, the bee is blurred, since it was moving quickly. Had I known she was coming in, I would have used a much faster shutter speed to freeze the action in the air. I suppose that the less for me here is to always expect the unexpected.
