Gull in Flight over Water

Gull in Flight over Water

The Gulls were giving quite an acrobatic display earlier this week, and I got lucky enough to catch some of that in photos. This particular photo is one of my favorites - the pose is impressive, the eye has a sparkle, and motion is frozen nicely, with the water being blurred out to draw the attention to the beautiful bird.

What do I like about this photo? I used a fast shutter speed (1/2500 seconds) and open aperture (f/6.3, the most my lens supports at this focal length) to freeze the action and blur out everything but the bird. This really makes the bird stand out.

What would I want to improve? The ends of the wings are a bit out of focus. I should probably have used an even faster shutter speed (1/4000 seconds or something similar) to freeze them as well - the ends of the wings are usually where the fastest movement in the frame is. Also, an angle a bit in front of the Gull would have resulted in an even more impressive picture, but this was out of my control, for obvious reasons.
